What happens when you walk in

Five minutes at the counter, and you know the price and the date.

You have probably left a garment somewhere and only found out what it cost when you came back for it. That is not how this works. The price and the date are both settled at the counter, before anything is pinned.

1

You are met at the counter

Small room, one wooden counter, a rack of finished work in plastic behind it. No ticket machine, no queue.

"I was greeted as soon as I entered."Frances B., Chicago · Yelp · January 2024
2

You get the price, written down

Before anything is pinned you are quoted for the work, and the number is written down for you. Ask about every piece you bring in, so the total at pickup is the total you agreed to.

"I was told how much it would cost, which was written down for me."Frances B., Chicago · Yelp · January 2024
3

You are fitted properly, on a platform

Private curtained changing rooms, mirrors, and a raised platform so a hem is measured on you at full length. Bring the shoes and undergarments you'll actually wear.

"There is a private dressing room to get changed and also a small platform in order to get the right length and measurements for long garments."Joy C. · Yelp · December 2021

You are given a date

A simple hem is usually about a week. A layered prom or evening hem with strap work runs closer to a week and a half. If you are working to a wedding or a graduation, say the date out loud at drop-off — that is the thing that settles it.

"They have never missed a date when I needed my clothes."Jim F., Northbrook · Yelp · August 2026

You try it on before you leave

The same few of us are here every day, so the person who pinned it is usually the person who hands it back. Cash or check at pickup.

"She tried it on there before and after. We were charged as quoted. Good quality work."Elaine M., Chicago · Yelp · April 2024
The work

Twelve kinds of garment, one pair of hands.

From a trouser hem to a wedding gown. Every garment is priced on its own — call with what you have and what you need done.

A hem on a lined wool trouser and a hem on a four-layer chiffon gown are not the same job, so every piece is priced on its own. Call, describe the garment, and you will have the number before you leave it.

Who you're handing it to

Ask for the sewing master.

Ms. Young does the fitting, the pinning and most of the sewing herself. Regulars have been asking for her by name for years.

"I am glad that we have a reliable, honest and very efficient sewing master in our neighborhood."Joy C. · Yelp · December 2021
The fitting area at Sewing Masters: light wood floor, patterned rugs, mirrors, chairs and a raised fitting platform
The room

A parlor, not a counter in a dry cleaner.

Light wood floors, rugs, a wall clock, tulips on the radiator cover. Curtained changing rooms with a bench in each, and mirrors set so you can see a hem from behind. It is a small room and it is looked after.

There is a lot behind the building with the back door clearly marked, so you are not circling Waukegan Road with an armful of dresses.

The engraved Sewing Masters sign: a white sewing machine silhouette and lettering cut in two sizes of capitals on dark stained wood, with an OPEN sign hanging below
On the door

The sign has been telling you what this place is.

An engraved walnut plaque with a treadle machine cut into it — no vinyl banner, no franchise colors. Look for it on the glass door at the top of the steps.

Before you come in

The questions people actually ask.

How much do alterations cost at Sewing Masters?

It sounds like you have been caught out by a bill before. Every garment is priced on its own — a hem on a lined wool trouser and a hem on a four-layer gown are not the same job — so there is no list to quote from. Call (847) 998-0370, describe what you have, and you will have the number at the counter, written down, before you leave the piece.

Do you take credit cards?

No — cash or check only. Please bring cash or a check when you come to collect.

How long do alterations take?

A straightforward hem is usually about a week. A layered prom or evening dress with strap adjustments runs closer to a week and a half. A lot of people feel uneasy handing over a dress they need for a fixed day. Most have found that saying the date out loud at drop-off is what settles it — tell us when you need it, and you will be given a date for it.

Do you alter wedding dresses?

Yes — wedding dresses, evening gowns and prom dresses, along with suits, uniforms, outerwear and leatherwear. Bring the shoes and undergarments you will actually wear on the day, so the hem is measured at the right length.

Is there parking?

Yes — there is a lot behind the building and the back door is clearly marked, so you do not need to park on Waukegan Road.

Where exactly is Sewing Masters?

1114 Waukegan Road, Glenview, IL 60025, on the west side of Waukegan between Glenview Road and Grove Street. Look for the brick building with the white porch railing — the engraved sewing-machine sign is on the glass door at the top of the steps.

What are your hours?

Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Saturday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Closed Sunday.
